happy weekend

I cannot believe how quickly the month of May has passed.  It has been super full and I feel a bit like a jetsetter being gone 3 out of the 4 weekends.  For the long weekend, R and I are headed up to Lake Tahoe for some adventure and relaxing in the mountains.  Usually we camp or backpack, but this time, we are staying at a resort right on the lake.  I am looking forward to room service and enjoying tea on the balcony.

This weekend also marks R and I's 1 year wedding anniversary.  It is hard to believe that just 12 months ago we were in the midst of last minute preparations for the big day.  I have learned so much this year about what it takes to truly develop a lasting partnership.  And, I know that there is so much more!

Here are the posts from the wedding if you're interested!

Happy weekend!

california adventure: palm springs

Let me just say it, I am obsessed with Palm Springs, CA.  The mid-century architecture, hipster vibe and hot weather make it an ideal location for a weekend away.  I spent this last weekend lounging by the pool and sipping cocktails at the Ace Hotel.

I had actually heard a lot of good things about the Ace and was really excited when one of my girlfriends planned her bachelorette weekend there.  It is a blend of 50's and ultra modern.  Minimalist rooms, diner, vespa rentals and pool-side service.

Palm Springs is about 2 1/2 hours outside of LA and the perfect desert getaway.  I flew in on Friday, where I met up with the rest of the girls for dinner and margaritas.  The next day, we were up early to have breakfast by the pool and then a full day of reading, napping and dipping in the pool.  SF does not  have the type of summers that encourage being poolside, so it was amazing to experience complete relaxation of doing nothing but enjoying the scene, sun and cocktails.

Saturday night, we went out to dinner at an amazing farm-to-table restaurant, Workshop Kitchen.  Amazing fresh foods and a glass of wine was the perfect ending to the sunny day.  Sunday was more of the same (but hotter).  I often forget how refreshing it can be to simply do nothing.  No site seeing, no crazy plans.  Simply an adventure of spending time with good friends in a new place.

blog turns 2!

May 22nd marks the official 2nd anniversary of tea with hummingbirds.  It has been a somewhat inconsistent 2 years, but I appreciate all those who have kept with me.  It has been amazing to explore my voice as a blogger and be able to share a visual journal with all of you.  I have learned so much and am loving the journey along the way!

Maybe some pink champagne is in order to celebrate!

happy weekend

photo Jeanne Damas

It has been a very interesting and exciting week.  Personally, I have really been struggling to get back into my routine after my weekend in Kansas (hence the lack of blogging).  I love being spontaneous, but I have found in the last few years that I also love the consistency and peace in having a routine to follow.  Like walking to the farmer's market every Saturday with R and the pup, or cooking dinner together once a week or tea and journaling on the balcony in the mornings.  The little things that can help make a day feel full.  These are all things that I love to do, but I find that I often struggle to actually do the things that I love regularly.  Which is why I have come to love small traditions that you don't have to plan, but simply do because that's what you do.

The last couple of weeks though have not been quite so routine, but also awesomely lovely.  Multiple dinners with friends, one of my dearest friends getting engaged (!) and later today I am headed out for a girls weekend in Palm Springs.  I am so excited to hang out by a pool, sipping drinks and enjoying a not so routine weekend in the sun!

a short 48 hours

A week ago I went back to Kansas for the weekend, in total about 48 hours, though since returning I have been having an extremely difficult time getting back into my routine.  It was a crazy couple of days with my baby sister's baby shower, my nephew's 2nd and other sister's 28th birthday.  It was non-stop to say the least.

Though short, it was sweet and a good reminder of the importance of family.  I am very fortunate to have an amazing community in SF and believe that this is where I am supposed to be (at this point), but living 2000 miles away can be very difficult at times.  I miss seeing my nephew grow up (he's talking now!), or having BBQ's with the whole family or being able to attend a family function without a 3 1/2 hour plane ride and 3 1/2 car ride after that.  However, being away also gives me the ability to be grateful for each short visit and appreciate my time there for how precious it really is.

Here are just a few scenes from Kansas...

happy weekend!

I am off to Kansas for the weekend!  It will be a very short, fast trip, but I am so looking forward to seeing the family and spending some quality time with my nephew!  I am sad though to be leaving this gorgeous summer-like weather we have been having in SF for cold and a possible snow storm...

Overlooking that, I am looking forward to open fields, quiet evenings and Tasty Pastry.
Happy weekend!

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 kentucky derby

This Saturday is the Kentucky Derby!  I have had a serious fascination with horse racing ever since I read this entire book series when I was a child.  Like most kids, I really wanted to own a horse, but of course my parents knew how completely impractical it was.  So, I obsessed through literature!

Read: National Velvet...not traditional horse racing, but a children's classic and is currently on my must-read list.
Visit: Louisville, KY.  Home of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.  I have only visited once during high school, but it was amazing to see the grounds of the most famous horse race (plus tons of other amazing things to do).
Wear: An over the top hat.   Of course.  Pair with a great sundress and a mint julep.
Watch: Seabiscuit.  The movie adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand's the journey of a triple crown winner and his jockey.

dreaming of...may day visits!

Happy May Day!  I remember as a kid running around delivering handmade bouquets (though I am sure they were not "real" bouquets) to our family and neighbors.  It was so fun to ring their doorbells and leave them springtime surprises!

May is definitely one of my favorite months of the year!   I love that everything is in full bloom and the grasses are green and lush!  Love, love, love!  Because of that, today, I am dreaming of running around on my {dream} vespa, in a cute, floral, cut-out dress delivering bouquets of tulips to all my friends in the city.  I love the neutral messenger bag to go with all of my spring must-have's and large enough to carry all my park essentials!
